Developer Survey Results 2019

This year, 94 members of our developer community told us at what level they currently consider themselves, what languages they want to learn in 2020 and what they want.

It’s not easy to start anything from scratch…

Last year I did a developer survey to try to understand more about how the community is doing. And even with so much content, videos, books, courses, many people still consider themselves beginners in the programming world.

But for those who will still learn how to program, I can only say one thing, go for it, with so many job opportunities, option to work remotely or in other countries, believe, it will not be time thrown away.

Developer survey key Results

Javascript is the most popular language among all the others, and 28% of those who participated say they know how to program in JS.
Even though it is the most popular language, JS still has a good number of people who consider themselves to be beginners, 50% of the devs consider themselves to be beginners and another 10% said that they know nothing about JS.
The group of those who consider themselves beginners is quite large and in fact 54% of the devs said that they are beginners or do not know anything in general.

In which languages can you program?

The first question in this developer survey was to know in which languages the community knows how to program. The Majority, 68% said they know how to program in Javascript and Java is following very closely. Only one of the participants said he knows how to program in all 5 languages (a prodigy).

And here came the first surprise, when I asked at what level they consider themselves, even though JS is the most popular language among the members who participated in the developer survey, 50% consider themselves beginners and 11% said they know nothing.

And Java, along with Javascript, carried most of the people who consider themselves at an intermediate level among all languages.

What language would you like to learn in 2020?

And seeking to know what the community is seeking to learn this year, the most expressive result appeared. Javascript is the language that most people want to learn in 2020, and followed (not very closely) by Python.

Which framework would you like to learn in 2020?

And with so many frameworks on the market, it was hard for the guys to decide between just one. But we had a favorite, React, he took the lead and became the most desired framework in the community, and yes, I’m aware that React is just a library, but let’s simplify here, ok?

And last but not least, I wanted to know what the community wants to specialise in 2020. And yet another significant result here, 50% say they’re going to run after to become a full-stack dev.

What we can see here is a clear command of Javascript, over all languages and frameworks, two of the most expressive results involved JS.
